my last day in power (what power?) went quite smoothly. technically we stepped down quite long ago, since the ccas and fr were suspended for quite a few weeks

i taught the sec 1s twirling, because that was what uncle nic did to me when i was sec 1 and he was the sec 4 sl. and i had to grab the chance since it was the last day as sl.

it was quite 温馨 to think that both my posts were passed to the sec 3s in my section, and both the posts i held stayed within the trombones for quite some time… sl – duh; qm – ;) hope the legacy continues for as long as possible, and i am NOT pressurising kah loon

on another note, i can’t seem to stop procrastinating stuff, and it feels quite bitter to touch the overdue homework

She used to live in Johor, I heard. Then she went on to say something about her son getting caught, and thrown into jail.

A classmate (I’m not naming) wrote it on the board today.

This year the sports groups in our school did not do really well (compared to history), but musical groups are getting better.

~~Probably due to the teapot-isation of the society nowadays?~~

This year is extremely significant for the musical groups in our school. Band and CO got GWH this year. Tomorrow is SO’s SYF.

Traditionally, the 3 instrumental musical groups in the school viewed each other as rivals. Someone gets GWH the other ones 不爽。Someone gets silver and some others snigger.

It is time for all 3 to work hand in hand, get that triple GWH, and slam it in the school’s face! (of course not so violent lah…)

I saw that some bandits have been concerned that the SO will get a GWH and then worry that we our 1st GWH in history will become less significant. NO! We need SO’s GWH, so that we have that TRIPLE GWH. Think of how the school will realise that the performing arts are not merely a Cat B ep3. The school will have a strong reason to increase our funding for our development. The triple GWH amplifies the effect, right?

I’m quite impressed when I heard about the St Nick’s performing arts concert. It shows that performing arts groups DO have the ability to work together and APPRECIATE each other.

Time to walk out of the 封建思想。

Show the school that we are improving together.

Let the school realise that we are not just ep3s or ccas.

We do not only decipher the random 豆芽s on paper and make sound.

Set the perimeters for “everything else is noise”.

Imagine a Singapore without COMPUTERS. [Thesis Statement:] The whole island would collapse – both physical and virtual infrastructure – since the population relies HEAVILY on computers for survival (surviving through work, surviving through homework, surviving through business…).

And since I have been influencing readers of my blog (the pathetic numbers) that computers devastate human beings, I will be seen as a threat to the society (who cares about me anyway). Henceforth, it would be legal that I get detained under the Internal Security Act.

But wait… Isn’t the ISA for political offenders, those who threaten the political stability of the nation?

Let’s ask ourselves: (i) can the government survive if there are no computers? (ii) can the city-state still function of the heavily computerised network is removed? (iii) can you live without computers for several days?

Let me assume that most of the answers will be a definite NO.

Which makes me a potential political detainee.

Computers are one of the WORST inventions by man. Now with blatant advertising in view of various economic benefits, it has infiltrated into almost every aspect of a person’s life.

Take for example (woa HP essay), the education sector. Look at the students now. Look at the students in Singapore. Count the number of people wearing specs. (Like: how many meh meh jump over the wall? anyway it’s 59) I once saw a student who looked like he was wearing goggles to school. No kidding.

So am I attributing the large number of students wearing goggles to school to the use of computers since young? YES. Absolutely YES. You say, people can be hardworking in reading books, and then get those 2 pieces of glass mounted on their nose! But these days, who would actually pick up a book and read on their own without having a need to? Just read off the pixels of your computer! When I say “these days”, I meant the 21st century of technology. Look at the term “technology”. Read again: “tech-no-lo-gy”. Wah so chim.

Look back into the times when people do not use computers. The spectacles industry was not as thriving as it is now. Who knows if later it will develop into a full economic sector?

Look at Japan. Or Japan band people. They hardly wear glasses. Yes, they eat some fish which is good for the eyes, and probably a lot of carrots too, but they also very hardly stare into the computer screens.

Look at the official statistics. The number of people wearing specs in my class during primary school in Malaysia was about 15 over 45. Now in secondary school in Singapore, the number was like 5 plus in 30-odd. Yes it’s official! I counted. But couldn’t recall exactly the numbers. Compare Malaysia and Singapore – their rate of growth and development, and look at the stuff they put on their work desks. Or just count the number of cables beside their work desks. Or just look at how they send letters.

The argument goes on and on. I just don’t like it when the computer really becomes integral of my life, or someone else’s life. It’s like silently conquering the world.

Nowadays, it’s not very smart of a person to not get a computer into his home if he can afford it. However, is it smart to devote your time to the screen and the silicon chips beneath your hands now? (I am assuming that you are using a laptop and have your hand on the keyboard or mouse, not anywhere else)

O mio babbino caro (Oh my dear papa) is an aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Giacomo Puccini (music) and Giovacchino Forzano (Libretto). It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between Schicchi and his prospective in-laws have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio, the boy she loves. It provides a contrasting interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and single-hearted love in the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing and feuding in medieval Florence of Puccini's only comedy, and it provides the only set-piece in the through-composed conversational musical give-and-take.

大年初一随家人去槟城，老豆车里四个人，在上槟城大桥之前那个Plaza Tol塞车一个小时，就是为了要等 SmartTag……当天太阳又晒得要〈不能说不吉利的话〉，就在车里差点变成3个烧鸡1个hot dog。终于在下午到槟岛。

Komtar 大厦附近有个 George Town White Coffee, 一看到就想起 Old Town White Coffee舊街場白咖啡。

吃了午餐就去饶槟岛一圈，见证了我人生中最美丽的一次太阳下山情景之一，晚上到小贩中心用餐。到了那儿，真是不禁感叹，新加坡真可惜……

婆婆妈妈（是成语不是人）来婆婆妈妈去，也准备要离开，但要离开了有车子迷路，Pulau Pinang 也走成 Pulau Pening……晚上回到家，也是11点多咯……

PONYO ROX!!!

I just love Miyazaki films, they have this element of nature and balance, and fantasy. Ponyo is one of the cutest films yet! The plot was very simple and predictable, but was very meaningful. And Joe Hisaishi’s music are fabulous too, and these 2 Japanese paired together make any product wonderfully amazing.

Well, went to watch Ponyo in Plaza Singapura with Caleb and Hanson, rare chance, and possible last one… Everyone has very different commitments…

What a memorable day today! It’s my first day officially wearing the sec 4 uniform to school! To bad I didn’t take a picture of myself… T.T

CSE orientation was OK lah… The whacko was screwed up, then “guess the person” game was quite interesting (partly because I didn’t lose xD). Then assembly started half an hour late.

Today there were a lot of “how can?” questions for me:

1) How can the HP be dominating the tower block? It’s just not fair. Wasn’t SMTP1 the top class last year? Talk about meritocracy in the Singapore political system.

2) How can the sec 3s be sitting in the centre block during the assembly and sec 4s sitting at the side? I never got to formally sit at the centre before~~ T.T

3) How can I be complaining so much during the 1st day of school? No. I’m not complaining. It’s just 心底话……

遗憾。。。

Anyway, I still have some positive things to say, at least…

I’m proud of my juniors in the section =D ooh… Hope you can keep up your progress for the rest of your journey in HCI. Sec 3s, the year passes really fast, in no time you’ll be wearing the really hot and stuffy uniform next year =D=D

I’m also glad that I changed room. I really miss my old D5R room, and Mr Toh’s care, and his wife’s baking (wow it’s simply lovely and really makes you regret not eating more… wah 嘴留于香 >.<). But at least the new room makes my you-know-or-may-not-know-who-if-you-live-in-boarding-school other roommate more organised and also cleaner. Now our corridor is less dusty yay!!

2009 is just around the corner... It's tomorrow!!

Tiffany Too (I guess she's Lillian Too's sister) said that 2009 is a great year for all, and better for water roosters like me (16 or 66 year-olds next year)! But will have some health and financial difficulties...

Bah who believes that... I think I do... However water roosters are normally quite optimistic, she said, and will get out of the difficulties in no time =D phew.

Holidays were quite not-very-but-to-a-certain-extent-still-a-little-bit productive. @@

- Spent some productive time with my dog at home (she kept producing saliva and holes on my shirt and also a tear on my mom's favourite slipper)

- Went to BSC woots! It was a good time there, food was nice, just that I had diarrhoea over the 2nd weekend and couldn't go to 北大 and 清华, which was a pity. But point is I enjoyed and gained weight (3kg) In BSC, you use com more than you sleep, so if you spend more time there, you would also receive a warm welcome from the zoo.

- I gained weight! Another 1 kg after I came back from BSC!

- I beat Shi-Jie, Zheng Yi, Huimin (Japan trip trombone buddy), and Bo Jun in Pet Society on Facebook! YAY!!! I'm now short of more than 20,000 paw points to beat Zi Kang 0.0" But now, since HCI blocks Pet Society, I'll just have to wait to go home and play...

- Finished reading Tuesdays with Morrie. So touching. I learnt a lot from that book. My respects to him.

- Band and band and band and band...
1. Band concert - I feel like a sec 1 again!
2. Band pracs - Took one week to get my embouchure back in shape after BSC. Pracs were ok and fun
3. Band camp - 2 days only, but was quite productive, especially for those lower secs. So sad I got a cleaning gauze stuck in a trombone slide ToT"
4. Band concerts - Watched the Philyouth and Nakamura Gakuen concert. Philyouth was just like any GWH bands, but Nakamura Gakuen rocked the whole VCH. They dunno encored for how many times, but in the end the girls cried. I guess they were super touched by the applause.

- El cumbanchero! I played the song during primary school. Then Huiyi (another Japan tripmate) blogged a version by TKWO on her blog (obviously). Then Nakamura Gakuen played the song. Wow. Primary school memories

- Spammed buying CDs. Bought around 200 RMB worth of CDs in China, then RM100++'s worth from Malaysia and Singapore. All are non-pop, and I'm proud of that. Haha

- Went to Genting. Can you believe my mom still enjoyed the Flume Ride and many other thrillers when she's as old as Malaysia? I really 佩服 my mom. 9-2

- TV was a big part of the holidays. I guess I won't need to explain.

- Watched the movie BOLT. Cute dog but poor thing. Kudos to Disney's animations.

- Also watched Anger Management during band camp. I have to admit the plot was great. But it's so lame that it's hard to tahan.

- Who's a Singaporean Pokemon? [corsola] Go figure it out yourself LA.

母语是一个民族的根本、是瞭解一个文化的根源、是追溯自我族群的根基，更是世界文化与歷史的一部份；一个母语的没落不仅是一个族群的失落，更是人类歷史与文化的损失。

学习与使用母语是基本人权、捍卫自己的母语是每个人与生俱来的责任；从世界性的宏观角度来看，保存各族群的母语更是所有人为保护人类文明发展应有的职责。

当西方国家並列为强国，掌握了国际主要经济动脉时，许多崇洋媚外的人都捨弃了自己的母语以英语至上，结果成了既没有自己的文化，也不被以英语为母语的一群所接纳的“无根另类”。

在大马，学习母语已被窄化成种族及政治课题；一些人以种族主义的视野看待国內母语教育，限制母语教育，特別是华教发展，造成大马教育体制出现华小和淡小虽然是国家教育体系一环，却一直面对各种生存压力，及不受政府承认但却备受华社推崇的独中存在的怪象。

一些人则以捞取政治资本为目的，刻意挑起种族情绪，把教育课题政治化；英语教数理政策进入关键性决策之际，加上一些政党党选在即，政治人物更是为贏得支持而把母语教育当成筹码玩弄。

在这种情况下，能认清教育本质而坚持母语教育的人是值得大家尊敬的；本以为学术界人士最能看清教育本质，没想到著名歷史学家邱家金竟也把母语教育与种族及政治掛鉤，把多源流学校视为国民团结及国家竞爭力的绊脚石，令人遗憾。

虽然邱氏否认发表过“妥协及放弃母语教育”的言论，但他確实认为华小和淡小没有必要存在，只要在单一源流学校为学生提供学习母语的机会就够了。

此话乍听之下並无不妥，但深思一层就不难发现，这等於是剥夺华印裔学习和使用母语的权利，並將使华语和淡米尔语逐步在大马没落。

新加坡的教育制度是邱氏所推崇的，但熟悉新加坡的人都知道，目前已没有多少真正的新加坡人会说流利的华语及瞭解中华文化；和新加坡一样，大马也有许多受英文教育的华裔不諳华语，甚至连中文名也没有；更甚的是，这些人认为华语是多余的，觉得不懂英语是羞耻的事。

如果单一源流教育制度孕育出来的是如此不懂得尊重及珍惜自己和其他民族文化及言语的人，这样的人肯定也得不到他人的尊敬与重视，难道这就是我们希望看到的国家未来？

BSC: Zoo in the cold

Went to Beijing Zoo today. Before that breakfast at McD's. Hotcakes and pork patty, whatever u call it.

Weather was super cold. It was raining last night, so today's sky is very blue. Perfect day to visit the zoo. Ms Cheong said the skies were dirty because of inversion (cold air sinks and traps the warm air and dust below) (and the warm air is already quite cold). The cold air might have brought the rain and washed away all the dust.

The scenery in the zoo is very nice. We went to see the pandas first, because they will sleep for the whole day once they finish their breakfast. >3<

Anyway, managed to take some photos with the pandas. Will post pics later.

My 512MB memory card ran out of space with all those panda photos. Missed out a lot of interesting shots, but later bought a 2GB card from the souvenir shop.

In Japan, Mr Siao said that taking pictures that are slanted inject more action into the photo. I tested out this technique this afternoon, and here are the results!

Since I'm going Beijing next week, I'm required to clear my room in BS before the holiday starts.

My estimated MSG after sitting for all the papers is 1.80, 10AUs. As of yesterday, MSG was 1.00 (with 3 subject grades confirmed). Then it rose t0 1.25 today with 4AUs back.

Higher papers for science expected lar, physics merit, chemistry pass (yay not "ungraded")
Going to check geog, english and maths tomorrow, malay on friday.

OMG the malay paper on tuesday was tough, forgot everything learned in primary school. Vocab kept leaking away from my memory.

Couldn't help spamming pokemon diamond these days. Now the game gets interesting after elite four and getting national dex. Hey I'm addicted to a bunch of coloured pixels moving about on the screen!

pretty obvious the chem calculations question was set by jloh
need 76 to get A1 for chem
really hope i do...

open-book exam, but the maths textbook served no other purpose than boosting confidence...

later went to do it, and the concept was super duper easy

assuming 1 get 10 marks for 1 and 4, which i am quite confident of,
i will sure pass!

question 3 might get the marks, i really dunno

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - - Malaysia's armed forces chief Thursday called for "stern action" against those inciting racial conflict in the multicultural country, after the government warned tensions were rising.

A senior member of the ruling party was suspended for three years on Wednesday for triggering a race row with an outburst against ethnic Chinese, calling them "squatters" and warning them not to seek political power.

General Abdul Aziz Zainal, the military chief who earlier this week warned that racial issues were a "major threat to the country", again called for a lid to be put on any troublemakers.

"I only voice my concern on this issue, stern action must be taken to prevent it from happening," he told a press conference.

"There is no country that wants to see itself in turmoil," he added.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has raised concern about the state of ethnic relations in Malaysia, where the population is dominated by Muslim Malays who live alongside large ethnic Chinese and Indian communities.

"The racial situation in our country looks like it is showing signs of strain and increasing tensions among races," he said as he announced the measures to punish errant ruling party member Ahmad Ismail.

"We for so long have been able to control the situation so that nothing untoward happens, but we can't allow a situation like this to continue... which could affect our peace and stability," he said.

Deputy police chief Ismail Omar also sounded a warning on Wednesday, saying that racially charged statements had triggered a dangerous rash of inflammatory messages on Internet blogs and SMS text messages.

"I am issuing a stern warning to all quarters to refrain from making statements on sensitive issues via the various media," he said, according to the state Bernama news agency.

Ahmad's comments had raised fears of a split in Abdullah's coalition of race-based parties, which includes ethnic Chinese parties that were infuriated by the diatribe.

"The patience of the Malays and Muslims has a limit. Do not push us to the wall, as when we turn back we will be forced to push the Chinese in the interests of our own survival," Ahmad said in a press conference Monday.

"The Chinese should not try to be like the Jews in America -- it is not enough they control the economy, now they want political control," he said.

Malays dominate politics in Malaysia, while ethnic Chinese are prominent in business. Stirring up conflict between the groups is a serious offence in a country which is still haunted by past racial violence.

The latest row erupted as opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim -- whose Keadilan party is the first pan-racial party in Malaysian political history -- attempts to woo the support of enough coalition lawmakers to topple the government.

In March elections the opposition dramatically increased the number of seats it holds, and Anwar this week said he is "on track" to sign up the 30 defectors he needs to seize power.
